In September 2025 I entered my 18th year as a full-time university faculty member. I’ve worked at universities in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and in 2025 I moved back to my home country of the U.S. to serve on the faculty of the Tisch Institute for Global Sport at New York University (NYU) as a Professor. I also serve as the Academic Director for Academic Affairs. Prior to this I served as the Director of the Institute for Sport Business and a Professor in Sport Business at Loughborough University London, where I also served as the campus Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee Chair.
Over the course of my career I have published extensively on the topics of sport marketing and communication with a specific focus on athletes’ and sport organizations’ use of social and digital media, as well as the media portrayals of athletes with regard to race, gender, and nationality. My research incorporates a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods and includes research strands in branding, consumer behavior, marketing communication strategy, user experience and engagement, and safeguarding in online spaces. According to Google Scholar, I am the most-cited sport media scholar in the world and fifth most cited sport business scholar. I have published five books, two of which were recently published in 2024, and have published over 75 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. I have been fortunate to present my research at conferences and invited lectures in countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Finland, France, South Korea, Egypt, and the United Kingdom. In 2015, I was named a North American Society of Sport Management (NASSM) Research Fellow in recognition of my outstanding contributions to the field of sport management. In 2023 I was honored to receive the inaugural NASSM Distinguished Research Award, acknowledging my distinguished record of intellectual contributions, advancement of knowledge to the literature and practice, mentorship and support of other scholars, and my research that validated social media as an important area of inquiry in sport management. In 2023 I was also honored to receive the Tony A. Mobley International Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana University School of Public Health, recognizing my outstanding personal and professional achievements in fostering the broad missions of public health.
I currently serve as an Associate Editor for two peer-reviewed journals: European Sport Management Quarterly and Managing Sport and Leisure. I also serve on the editorial boards of five other academic journals. I’m a Governing Board member of NASSM, where I also previously served on the Executive Council from 2017-19, and I am a professional member of the European Association for Sport Management (EASM), where I previously served as Chair of the New Researcher Award panel.
